Bitkom study: Cyber attacks cost German companies 267 billion euros

The study "Economic Protection 2024" by Bitkom and the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution shows that the economic damage caused by cyber attacks in Germany has risen to around 267 billion euros in the past twelve months.

81 percent of the companies surveyed were victims of theft of data and IT equipment, digital and analog industrial espionage or sabotage. Organized crime is responsible for 70 percent of the attacks, while foreign intelligence services are responsible for 20 percent.

The study also shows that awareness of the impact of such attacks is growing in the economy: 65 percent of companies see a threat to their existence from cyber attacks, compared to only 52 percent last year.

Spending on IT security has increased to 17 percent of the IT budget, showing that companies are increasingly investing in their security.
